all receiving the update. Still in the works are the new Turbo and the GT2 models, though they too are drawing near to their expected unveiling. Having nearly completed development work on these vehicles, Porsche engineers are already hard at work testing prototypes of the next-generation 998 model.
We have previously seen test vehicles for the standard 998 Coupe and Cabrio models, as well as the high-performance Turbo, and now we have the first images of what appears to be the 911 Targa model caught in the snow.
Clear differences between the 998 and the current 997 model are a pair of more upright headlights, side mirrors positioned at the side of the doors and not at the window, and a slightly longer body. This particular test vehicle has some visible lines around the rear window, suggesting that it is removable. It is not clear yet if Porsche will only have AWD versions of the Targa like the current model, but tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations may see the introduction of a lighter RWD version.
It is also still too early to determine what changes Porsche has in store for the engine lineup, but expect to see the recently revised flat-six engine range carry over with only minimal updates – possibly for emissions and economy standards. The new PDK dual-clutch gearbox will also carry over as will a standard six-speed manual.
The 998 version of Porsche’s iconic supercar isn’t expected to arrive in showrooms until late 2011, but we expect to see much more of the car from spy photographers as it develops.

Check out the full article with pictures on Motor Authority.

Porsche Carrera GT vs McLaren Mercedes SL-R

Check this High-Def video: Porsche Carrera GT vs McLaren Mercedes SL-R 50-300 km/h duel race on M5Board.

The Porsche 911 Carrera for 1997: Improving on 1996

The 1997 911 is an important vehicle to Porsche for the coupe market segment. The Carrera is a member of a series of five trim levels for the 911 which include Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa, and Turbo. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Porsche. There is strong competition from vehicles from Lexus.

Performance

The 911 Carrera is equipped with a Porsche 3.6 liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 12 valves. The engine is mated to a ZF 4-speed Transaxle. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Porsche.

The fuel system for the 1997 911 is a Bosch Motronic design, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel flow is regulated by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The storage capacity of the fuel tank is 19.40 gallons.

The 911 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

911 Carrera Statistics

The 911 is 167.70 inches long, 70.70 inches wide, and 51.80 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 89.40 inches. It is able to seat 4 comfortably.

The listed retail price in 1997 (MSRP) was $73,000, with an invoice cost of $62,962. This price is slightly higher than the industry average price for a two-door Coupe.

The standard warranty period for the 911 is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the drivetrain for 36* months or 50,000* miles respectively. This is standard in the coupe market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.

Fuel Efficiency

The 1997 911 gets 23 miles/gallon on the highway and only 16 in the city. This is average for a coupe car.

In Summary

There are several reasons why the Porsche 911 Carrera sold well in 1997. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Porsche, specifically a 911.

Source: German Sports Car

Porsche Boxster S Luanched

Beautiful Package
by Jim McCauley (08 Feb 09)
The 911 has given the world the impression that Porsche only build rear-engined sportscars, but while that model range and its derivatives have had more than their fair share of competitive success, the mid-engined cars, with their power unit inboard of the rear axle have also done their bit to fill the trophy cabinet.

Benefiting from the competition successes are the road cars and the current mid-engined offering is the Boxster, introduced in 1996 and revised in 2004. Now the latest development follows the company's slow evolutionary path and refines rather than radicalises the design of the original, keeping the significant advancements to the powertrain underneath.

And that is where it is in the Boxster – underneath – as the compact packaging of the model means that the engine unit is completely encapsulated in the bodywork with the only access being to the fluid levels through a panel in the rear luggage compartment. The excellence of the packaging can only be appreciated by viewing a longitudinally-sectioned car which Porsche had on display at its recent European launch.

The immediate visual appeal is "Ah, that looks better," with some soul searching as to what the actual modifications are. Main focus of the remake are the nose and tail sections, where the softer organic curves of the original are squared up to give a more aggressive and purposeful presence. Twin round light units add to the new image while LED running lights and tail light units are introduced.

But the styling tweaks are merely the hallmarks of the precious metal underneath. While the standard Boxster receives an increase in capacity to 2.9 litres (up from 2.7), the Boxster S retains its 3.4-litre flat-six but with increases in both horsepower and torque, now 310bhp at 6400rpm and 265lb/ft at 5500rpm. The end result benefits performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Although a six-speed manual gearbox is standard provision in the S, the launch models all featured Porsche's PDK (Dopplekupplungsgetriebe) transmission with steering wheel shift paddles and digital gear indicator in the instrument cluster.

Launch venue was a nostalgic trip for Porsche – back to the roads of Sicily where their compact mid-engined Spyders often outperformed larger and more powerful cars in the gruelling Targa Florio races. While the venue may have promised an opportunity to at least enjoy a spell with the hood down, a rain-soaked island offered only additional challenges on flooded roads smeared with freshly eroded soil.

Despite the engineering advancements and additional refinement, the deep exhaust note is retained, burbling into the cockpit under throttle, and adding to the experience. A lined hood provides near to hardtop quietness and the feeling of quality is present from the outset.

In raw terms, the Boxster S manages its 0-62mph sprint in 5.2 seconds while 100mph from rest can be achieved in 18.2 seconds en route to a potential maximum of 169mph. But it is the smoothness of its progress that impresses most with the seven-speed PDK transmission paring tenths of a second off the times that can be achieved with the manual gearbox. Using twin clutches – one for the odd-numbered gears and one for the even-numbered – the gears are almost instantaneously changed, but smoothly rather than abruptly. Manual override can be selected on the gearshift lever or the steering wheel paddles which offer downshifts on the rear of the spokes and upshifts on the front facing segments.

New suspension settings and nicely weighted steering enhance the quality of driving while electronic handling packages allow for some rear end movement when the car is pushed but safely restrain it, in what is a very communicative and enjoyable package, beautifully balanced on twisty roads and rock solid at speed.

A sprinting edge can be gained with the Launch Control feature which is part of the optional Sports Chrono Package and is essentially a trackday extra. The settings can be further honed by the Sports Plus package.

Like any model in the Porsche ranges, the Boxster S can be personalised with a range of additional features from wheel and braking upgrades to sound and communication options. But in the current climate, even a performance car has to have environmental sympathy and the new Boxster S with the PDK gearbox offers 16% better fuel economy than its equivalent predecessor, achieving 30.7mpg on the combined cycle while emissions are down to 221g/km.

Overall, the new Porsche Boxster S is more appealing visually than the outgoing model and its more aggressive styling hints at the potency of its performance. It delivers superbly and to explore its limits, customers can avail themselves of the expert tuition at the new Porsche Driving Experience Centre at Silverstone.

The new Boxster S goes on sale alongside the standard Boxster on February 21, priced at £41,250.
The 1918 Minerva Type NN Special would probably line up on row one. Powered by a 5.7-litre four-cylinder Aster engine, the sloping-tail two-seater took some 12 years to build and has since competed at Assen, Montlhery, Loton Park, Donington Park and Prescott.
Sitting a good dozen slots further back would be the 1956 Lotus XI Series One. To desirable 'Le Mans' specification, the aluminium-bodied sports racer was driven at both Monaco and Goodwood by its former keeper, Ron Gammons. Maintained by Denis Welch for the last eight or so years, the iconic Lotus boasts a 1.5-litre four-cylinder FWB Coventry-Climax engine.
Separated by a generation, but perhaps sharing the same row, the 1966 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA (complete with FIA HTP papers) and 1983 Renault 5 Alpine offer considerable 'tin top' thrills, while those who prefer endurance events might be drawn to the 1954 Arnolt Bristol Bolide, or the 1957 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT, both of which are potentially eligible for the Mille Miglia Storica. The Aurelia is no stranger to the limelight, being a former Lancia Motors (England) demonstrator and press car.
Delivering explosive performance and trackday fun aplenty, the twin-turbocharged 1970 / 2002 Porsche 917K Evocation and RUF-modified 2000 Porsche 996 GT3 would still be no match for the Group C / GTP cars hogging the back row. Presented as a single
lot, the fearsome Argo JM20 Chevrolet (6.7 litres) is accompanied by an Argo JM19 Chevrolet (6.3 litres) stablemate and a huge quantity of spares, including an unnumbered monocoque and chassis castings.
Headlining the motorcycle section is the ex-Carl Fogarty 1990 Honda RC30 (F1 TT and Senior TT winner), although it faces strong competition from the ex-Graeme McGregor 1984 EMC250 (an IoM TT winner), the ex-Joey Dunlop 1990 Honda RS250 and various Yamaha TD1s, not to mention two Norton Manx Replicas and a Matchless Beale G50 Replica.
Star among the road cars is the 1965 Jaguar E-type 4.2 Coupe 'Coombs Special'. A one-off prototype crafted by Frua and Italsuisse, the svelte sportscar made its international debut at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, but proved too expensive for marque devotee and tuner John Coombs to put into production.
A break from the red and yellow examples which proliferate, the UK-supplied 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT proudly retains its original Argento Auteil livery and perspex headlamp covers.
Reputedly the only one of its kind known to the Vauxhall Car Club, the 1924 Vauxhall 23/60 Malvern Tourer has had just three owners since 1959. A paragon of originality, even down to its floorboards and tool tray, it would make an intriguing alternative to a post-WW1 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.
A Post Vintage thoroughbred with its roots in the 'Roaring Twenties', the 1932 Alvis 12/50 TJ Tourer wears replacement coachwork in the style of Cross & Ellis. Other notable entries include the 1995 Aston Martin DB7 which an Italian prince had covered in gold-, platinum- and palladium-leaf; a 1978 Rolls-Royce Corniche Fixed Head Coupe which Chris Patten owned during his governorship of Hong Kong; and a 2000 Caterham 21 with just 4,700 miles on the clock.
Entries for this exciting auction remain open until Tuesday 17 February 2009.
For information on any of the above, or to receive an entry pack, please contact H&H Limited via www.handh.co.uk
Entry List with multiple photos of each entry at:
www.classic-auctions.co.uk/auctionlistings.php?saleid=99C

The 2009 Porsche Boxster is out to launch

To keep its product portfolio contemporary, Porsche has reworked its Boxster for 2009.

In truth, it takes a keen eye to spot the individual changes -- new LED lighting aside. The good news is that the subtle makeover achieves the desired effect, building on the Boxster's reputation and the open-air concept first shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1993.

Up front, the Boxster earns larger air intakes and restyled headlights along with bright light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that are used as the daytime running lights. The rear lamps also adopt LEDs for the brake and tail lights -- the tail light portion forming a neat eyebrow over the cluster at night.

Read full news on The Vancouver Sun.

Porsche Panamera Will Debut This September In India

Porsche is all planned with its Panamera car to be launched in India by September this year in India against rivals like BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class sedan. Porsche India has already ordered 50 units of Panamera, which is expected to be priced above Rs.86 Lakhs for the Indian market. The said model will be launched around the world and in India in September.

“The launch of Panamera marks the entry of Porsche into a brand new segment. In India, we intend to introduce the model around the same time as its global debut. We have begun to get enquiries and we hope to sell 50-60 units of the model in the first year of its introduction in India,” said Mr Rod Wallace, Managing Director, Precision Cars India.

Porsche, which sold 168 units last year, has set a target to sell 250 units in the current year. Globally, it sold 98000 units with the US accountable for nearly 40000 units and Chinese sales were also much ahead of India at 8000 units last year. Mr Wallace said that he expects the increase in sales through its sports utility vehicle Cayenne and Boxster.

Porsche – Style and Speed (Price Guidelines)

Shopping for an early Porsche? Expect to pay $50,000 to $60,000 for a well-restored car. A factory sunroof adds about 5 percent, and the 356SC, with a more powerful engine, is worth another 5 percent.

1958 PORSCHE SPEEDSTER The entry price for this legendary car is about $175,000. Rare factory options like a hard top and Rudge knockoff racing wheels make collectors salivate. In contrast to the Dow industrials, Speedsters have roughly doubled over the last five years.

PORSCHE 356 GMüND With just 50 built from 1948 through early 1950, Gmünds are valuable pieces of Porsche history. The trouble is, with only 40 horsepower and the worry of fragile — and irreplaceable — aluminum bodywork, they’re not a lot of fun to drive, and may be better suited to a museum than to the road. The 30-odd survivors are worth $150,000 to $190,000.

1965 PORSCHE 911 The first year of 911 production interests collectors for obvious reasons. The cars are rare, but they are somewhat fragile, prone to rust and have touchy handling. Collectors are willing to pay $50,000 to $75,000. This little town in Germany is world-renowned for its jewelry and watch making industry, but is now famous for something a little bit more extravagant.

Enter the new gold-plated Porsche Boxster. Visualis, a company situated in Pforzheim, hired an artist to create the gilded car. It is unknown how much the vehicle costs, but one thing is a certainty, it is going to be going at a pretty penny. In addition to the original creation, a further nine gold plated models will undergo this unique gilding process. The vehicle was originally created to attract visitors to a jewelry museum opening, and it was a huge success. Porsche saw a gap in the market and a potential demand for this extravagantly luxurious vehicle.

Although you may be dazzled at first by the bright exterior, which is plated in 22 carat gold, that is not where the gilding stops. All the major interior components are also gold plated, including the steering wheel and door knobs. To complete this luxurious vehicle, the alloy rims are also plated in 22 carat gold.

There have been mixed reactions regarding this extraordinary vehicle. There are many who appreciate and covet this golden Porsche. The wealthier end of society may take it as the ultimate status symbol. As if owning a Porsche Boxster is not flashy enough, they can now drive around in gold! It is definitely not the car for someone who wishes to blend into the crowd, because this car will most certainly turn heads. On a particularly bright and sunny day, it may even turn heads in the opposite direction! Now naturally, there are the cynics. Perhaps composing of those who love it but can't afford it? Not necessarily. Some Porsche enthusiasts feel that this car lacks class, and removes from the original ranking of the Porsche brand. Some people even feel that despite its luxuriousness, the car is ugly!

Let's weigh up the pros and cons of this gilded Porsche. It cannot be denied that plating a Porsche Boxster in gold is a tedious and meticulous task. Some people love gold, and opulence, and Porsches too! In this case, this is definitely the car for those people, if they can afford it. There is no doubt that a gold plated Porsche Boxster is a very valuable investment car. Even if the value of the car depreciates, at least they will be able to get a return on the value of the gold!

Some of the cons, well first of all, you have to think about how much it is going to cost to repair the car should you scratch it! Or have an accident in it for that matter. Perhaps we should be more realistic, as the risk of having an accident in this car is quite low. It will be quite a difficult car to miss on the road. This being said, it does pose the risk of causing accidents on a sunny day should fellow road users be blinded by its reflection in the sun.

For more pictures and reviews on Porsche Cars visit http://www.porsche-car.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=John_Thackeray

Porsche Carrera GT – A Miracle

The Porsche Carrera GT is a powerful sports car of all the other cars released in the year 2004-2006.
The boffins at Porsche have been beavering away and now they’re ready to launch this gadget-heavy model – a GT3 version of the latest 911 – at Geneva next month.

Fundamentally a lean and mean 911, it’s primarily aimed at drivers who like to take their cars out on race tracks. Still it’s one level away from the GT3 RS, which is an even more radical version with a roll cage, racing seats and less sound insulation. And no doubt there’ll be a new RS version along later.

Anyway, the new GT3 is powered by a 3.8-litre version of the traditional flat-six engine and has 435bhp (20bhp more than the last GT3) that takes the car to 194mph and from 0-62mph in 4.1 secs.

The new GT3 also has new wings and spoilers. On most cars this stuff just looks faster but on the GT3 it doubles the amount of downforce acting on the car compared to the old model.

It’s also fitted with a version of Porsche’s stability management system that allows you to switch on traction control and stability control. What’s more, it doesn’t reactivate itself under what Porsche calls extreme driving conditions – which I think means a big spin.

Sexiest of all are new wheels that attach with centre-locking like F1 cars. There’s also an optional system that raises the car’s front by 1.2ins – handy for driveway bumps.
The bad news? £81,914 when it’s on sale in the autumn.

via Mirror Blog

Porsche Updates GT3

Hot on the heels of Aston Martin's new V12 Vantage is Porsche's revised 911 GT3, which also makes its world debut in Geneva next month.

GT3 sprints to 100kph in 4.1sec.

Along with an upgraded intake and exhaust system, the GT3's flat-six engine has grown from 3.6 litres to 3.8 boosting power by 20hp at 435.

Due to a lighter overall weight, the GT3 betters the V12 Vantage's 0-100kph time by 0.1sec at 4.1. A handcrafted aluminum recreation of the very first Porsche, a Type 64 ‘VW Aerocoupe,’ shines in the center of the first floor. Prototypes on display include a 928 model almost long enough for four doors, a 1989 “Panamericana” with odd, frog-like curves and the darling of the museum staff: the 1992 Boxster prototype that won Best in Show at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show. Porsche hopes to lure 200,000 visitors a year to the museum — competition for the rival Mercedes museum, located a half-hour away in Untertuerkheim, a Stuttgart suburb. So if you want a Porsche but you can’t afford a brand new one, a Approved vehicle is your best choice since you can be sure that it will meet your expectations.
But what is the difference between a Porsche Approved certified vehicle from a conventional pre-owned vehicle?
First of all, the Porsche Approved cars are inspected by factory trained technicians and if they find any faults, repairs are carried out in line with the strict Porsche quality criteria. Secondly, every Porsche Approved vehicle comes with a comprehensive Warranty:

If sold while under the new car warranty, Coverage is up to 6 years or 100,000m/160,000km total, whichever comes first

If sold once the new vehicle warranty has expired, Coverage is 2 years from the date of sale or up to 100,000m/160,000km, whichever comes first.

And last but not least, you will get membership in Porsche Road Assistance that offers exclusive support server & security. The result of owing a Porsche Approved is that you will enjoy driving a safe, quality value which really cannot be described as a pre-owned vehicle.

Larger Porsche stake in Scania triggers by price fall

Swedish truckmakers's, Scania share price have been dropped below of the mandatory offer by Porsche. Now, Porsche has released pictures and information on the latest GT3, which debuts at the Geneva auto show in March. The Turbo will have to wait until the Frankfurt show in September, and then it may still be some time before the Turbo Cabriolet and the Turbo-based GT2 are updated. The idea for this new model came up as Volkswagenand Porsche collaborated to create a new car. VW would take 914 bodies and finish them as 914/4s, and Porsche would take their portion of the body shells, and build 914/6s. When sold inNorth America, however, all 914s would be considered Porsches.

Porsche 914 is not like other Porsches. It has pop-up headlamps, a vertical rear windshield, and a flat deck lid covering the rear trunk and engine. It has no backseats so when you sit down, you are practically on the floor, which is on the road.

The interior of the 914 is quite simple, not luxurious but with all necessities. There’s not too much space other than the passenger seat. The transmission is like the 928's with 1st down and to the left. The 914 has a targa top, and like 911's, it stores in the trunk. But if you take off the top and roll down the windows, the Porsche 914 is a pretty nice little roadster.

Porsche 911 Turbo

In 2006, Dr. Ing. This top-of-the-range model will have its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on February 28, 2006 and as from June 24, 2006 it will be available in German dealerships.

The 911 Turbo (type 997) has a few improvements. It has an output of 480 bhp at 6,000 rpm, a 3.6 litre engine, a rated torque of 620 Nm and a maximum torque available between 1,950 and5,000 rpm. All these numbers are translated into driving performance, as the 911 Turbo with six-speed manual transmission only needs 3.9 seconds to get from zero to 100 km/h. The coupereaches 200 km/h in 12.8 seconds. Despite these performance statistics, Porsche developers succeeded to keep the average consumption to 12.8 liters per100 km.

Porsche 911 Turbo - video powered by Metacafe

For those who need even more speed, the 911 Turbo offers the optionally Tiptronic S automatic transmission. This way, it can reach 100 km/h from a standing start in just 3.7 seconds and 200 km/h in a mere 12.2 seconds. Both manual and automatic transmissions have a top speed of 310 km/k. Available for the first time, the optional “Sport Chrono Package Turbo” enhances the vehicle’s flexibility even further.

The Porsche 911 Turbo features a redesigned all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch. The result will be the transfer of the available power to the road. That’s because, depending on the driving conditions, this system will determine the optimal torque distribution to ensure the best-possible drive. Also, Porsche Traction Management (PTM) ensures variable power distribution to the two driven axles. This means that on the road the 911 Turbo will prove outstanding traction in the rain or snow, high agility on narrow countryroads and optimal active safety even at high speeds.

The new 911 Turbo’s driving performance is duly tempered by its brake system, which comprises monobloc fixed-caliper disc brakes with six pistons at the front axle and four at the rear. The diameter of the internally ventilated and perforated brake discs at the front and rear wheels is 350 millimeters. An optimized ceramic brake system that Porsche offers is Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). This high-tech system reduces with 17 kilograms the standard brake system and provides an excellent fading stability.

The major bodywork change of the 911 Turbo is the modified front end with its distinctive, tautly drawn cooling air inlets. Combined with the standard oval bi-xenon headlights, it will define the new unmistakable image. From the rear perspective too, the Turbo will seem more powerful. This is due first and foremost to its tail end, 22 millimeters wider than that of the previous model, to which the redesigned wing spoiler element has been aligned.

Secondly, the lateral air inlets behind the doors have been redrawn and now they offer a more efficient supply of cooling air to the charge-air intercoolers.

The basic price for the 911 Turbo is 115,000 Euros. In the USA, from July 8, 2006, the vehicle will be available at $122,000 (not including taxes).

Porsche Cayman

In comparison of the engine, The Porsche Cayman is positioned between the Boxster and 911. Still, it has its own different personality. It is snappier, easier, and not burdened by heavy weight hanging out the back and the need to manage the effect of that weight.

Porsche Cayman S - video powered by Metacafe

The Cayman is strictly a two-seater because the engine sits where the rear seats would otherwise be. This means that the engine is not quite readily accessible, although there's a wayinto the oil filler via the boot. Under that long tailgate, is revealed a generous luggage area to supplement the front 911/Boxster-sized boot. Like all other Porsche, the Cayman is not very big, which makes it very practical and usable. And for all its obvious Boxster genes, the Cayman is very much its own car with its curvaceous rear wings and neat fastback roof. As with other Porsches, there's a movable rear spoiler, which deploys above 120km/h.

Going back to were we started, the engine, the Cayman has 3.4 litres, a mix of the cylinder barrels of a 911 with the crankshaft of a Boxster. A 911 engine is of 3.6 or 3.8 liters and a Boxster S has a 3.2-litre engine. It's a strange thing, but even though today's Porsche engines are water-cooled, they still overlay their intake and exhaust notes with a breathy whine like that of the giant air-cooling fans of old.

Basically, the Cayman is a mix and it doesn’t have a huge number of new and unique parts. In short, the Cayman is a structure two and a half times stiffer because it’s just a Boxster with a roof. In turn, that means that the driving experience becomes much more focused because its suspension can have tauter, sportier setting.

Porsche Cayman reaches a maximum speed of 275 km/h and gets from zero to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, even if the fuel thirst is low for such pace. The Cayman is especially good with the optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), but unlike a 911, it works well enough without it, thanks to a ride that's firm but seldom turbulent. PASM makes the Cayman sit 10mm lower, and in its Sport mode it tautens the damping. And it feels absolutely fantasticwhen you have the Chrono option (complete with stopwatch for timing your hot laps).

Bottom line, Porsche Cayman is a remarkable illustration of a rigid, solid-roofed bodyshell's advantages. The Cayman S has all the positive Porsche attributes you could want, and none of the snags. It's not the fastest Porsche, not the fiercest, not the most breathtaking. It is a pooling of other Porsche parts, which means that the Cayman is not expensive to develop but it will generate big profits. The new car, by the way, takes its name not from a tax-haven archipelago, but from a type of crocodile.

Porsche Cayenne Interior

Porsche offers three versions of the four-door Cayenne: the Cayenne, The Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo. The standard models of the Cayenne and Cayenne S come with features such as: 18-inch alloy wheels, stability control given by the Porsche Stability Management, leather seating, power seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a 350-watt, 15-speaker Bose audio system. Since it’s a true Porsche, Cayenne’s ignition switch is on the dash’s left side. The gauge cluster is nearly perfect but the climate and radio controls are indecipherable cluster of buttons and knobs. The good thing is that the satellite steering wheel controls are standard which means that they will be easier to find. The Turbo model comes not only with additional power but also with more technical and luxury features.

Among those we enumerate: an adaptive suspension with automatic ride height and damping adjustment (Porsche Active Suspension Management), bi-HID headlights, a CD-based navigation system, heated seats front and rear, seat memory, sonar front/rear parkingassist and power adjustment for the steering wheel. But the options the Cayenne offers are meant to increase functionality and personality. These options are: four-zone climate control, bolstered sport seats, various wheel/tire upgrades and trailering preparation. With a maximumcargo capacity of 63 cubic feet, the Cayenne has slightly more capacity than the Range Rover but less than the Infiniti FX45.

Porsche Cayenne - The Engine

With every new automobile, Porsche tried to redefine the meaning of performance, by creating a more powerful engine. Cayenne Turbo makes no exception to this rule. Like all Porsche engine, it is hand assembled and the twin turbo V8 rises to an exacting level of technicalexcellence.

Motronic ME7.1.1.is a system that controls the split-second precision of the Cayenne V8 and V6 super engine. This new highly intelligent engine management system balances impressive power with great smoothness. All this to prove that Cayenne`s "brain" matches its brawn. The Motronic system is built to monitor a wide range of sensors and engine components. It compares streams of data with corresponding sets of reference values, all this in a speed of milliseconds. Then, if it finds any differences, the system adjusts key engine functions, such asthe ignition of fuel injection, based on this comparison. Into Motronic management are included other key systems, such as onboard diagnostics and cylinder-specific knock control, with automatic adaptation to any change in fuel quality. All this for optimal performance in all driving conditions.

This process is seamless and automatic so the engine has a great level of power and torque. Also, another great result is better fuel economy and lower emissions in the exhaust stream.

Another function of the Motronic system is the managing of air flowing into the engine to ensure maximum levels of performance. It does that by regulating boost pressure on the Cayenne Turbo.

The Cayenne model includes another system, the resonance induction system with a variable-length intake manifold. This is also an inventive engineering concept that uses pressure waves created by the inlet valves. It does this to increase the density of the incoming air, which, in the end, will increase the amount of energy released during combustion. There are two intake tubes, and depending on the speed, the system will select one of them. The longer tube is used at lower speeds in order to maximize low-end torque. At around 4250 rpm, it switches to shorter Intake tube so that it maximizes power output with a more eager throttle response.

The Porsche Cayenne engineers wanted to improve combustion for more power, better fuel economy, reduced emissions and less maintenance. To do so, they created a static high-voltage ignition system with separate ignition coils on each individual spark plug. This is an advanced method that allows a longer spark-plug life. The sequential fuel injection system is equally advanced. A returnless fuel supply system serves each injector in order to continuouslyadjust the precise air/fuel mix. The result is of course a better environment, because it controls the emissions.

Porsche - The Beginning

I have already post the article about Porsche history. This article is more focus on the beginning of Porsche (as the title above). Just scroll down below to find out about 5W, 1H about Porsche's beginning. Happy reading!

It`s hard to say exactly which is the beginning of Porsche story. It could be in 1950, when the famous Max Hoffman introduced the Porsche 356 to the United States. Or in 1948 when the first automobile to bear the name Porsche was introduced. But in order to understand Porsche’s heritage and its philosophy we need to go back to 1875, when, in September, at the home of a tinsmith in the Bohemian village of Haffersdorf, a son was born. His name was Ferdinand Porsche.

Since his adolescence, Ferdinand Porsche showed glimpses of technical genius: at the age of 18, he wired family's home for electricity in 1893. Still, he didn’t show many signs of disciplinedengineering skills that will eventually become his trademark. Even if the “Doctor” is usually appended to his name, it is in essence honorary, since his only formal technical training was as a part-time engineering student in Vienna.

By the age of 25, the young Ferdinand Porsche had entered the field of automotive design. His first car design was already accepted by Lohner & Co. of Vienna. Over the next 20 years, Ferdinand Porsche, the temperamental but brilliant engineer succeeded in associating with every major automobile manufacturer in Germany. At the same time, he designed a dozen of the most technically significant cars in history.

Working for Mercedes-Benz, he helped develop the most revered Mercedes-Benz cars of all time: the SSK series. For NSU, he designed Auto Union Wanderer and the Type 32, a precursor of the Volkswagen Beetle.

After being dismissed from Mercedes for disagreeing with the firm's staid engineering policies, Porsche decided to establish what later became Porsche A.G.: his own engineering consulting group. In a small office in Stuttgart, the senior Dr. Porsche gathered a select group of engineers to work under the dramatic name, "Doctor of Engineering Ferdinand Porsche, Inc., Construction Facility for Land, Air, and Sea Transportation." One of his employees was his youthful son, Ferry. His primary interest was one that any young man might select: sports and racing cars.

The senior Dr. Porsche and his team were kept extremely busy. The consulting firm developed for Steyr (now the utility-vehicle wing of the Steyr- Daimler-Puch combine), the Austria luxury sedan, but it did not progress beyond the prototype stage. They worked a lot for Auto Union, now Audi: the company developed the Front, the world's first front-drive economy car. They astonished Auto Union with the mid-engine Grand Prix cars and their supercharged V-12 and V-16 engines which, together with Mercedes- Benz racers, dominated European auto racing for nearly a decade.

After that, the firm created its best-known designs for NSU and Zundapp. The pair of prototypes was characterized by Dr. Porsche's patented torsion-bar suspension and a rear-mounted engine. Since neither company moved rapidly enough to manufacture the designs, Porsche sold the concept to the German government. Then, he oversaw the construction of a plant on Wolfsburg to manufacture the design. His drawings called the car the Type 60. The world came to know it as the Volkswagen Beetle.

After the second World War, the Porsche Company started to create vehicles that beard its name, and so became knows world wide. Now, nearly a century later, Porsche became the marque and the family that created outstanding, often unique and surely lasting contributions to automotive engineering and design.

Porsche 924 pictures

<embed style="WIDTH: 426px; F. Porsche GmbH" in 1931, with main offices at Königstrasse in the center of Stuttgart. The company offered motor vehicle development work and consulting, and did not initially build any cars under its own name. One of the first assignments the new company received was from the German government to design a car for the people, a "Volkswagen" in German. This resulted in the Volkswagen Beetle, one of the most successful car designs of all time. The first Porsche, the Porsche 64, was developed in 1939 using many components from the Beetle.

During World War II Volkswagen production turned to the military version of the Volkswagen Beetle, the Kübelwagen, 52,000 produced, and Schwimmwagen, 14,000 produced. Porsche produced several designs for heavy tanks during the war, losing out to Henschel & Son in both contracts that ultimately led to the Tiger I and the Tiger II. Although not all this work was wasted as the Porsche deigned chassis for the Tiger I was used as the base for the Elefant tank destroyer. Porsche also developed the Maus super-heavy tank in the closing stages of the war, producing two prototypes.

In 1945 the Volkswagen factory fell to the British. Ferdinand lost his position as Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen and a British major, Ivan Hirst was put in charge of the factory. On December 15 of that year, Ferdinand was arrested for war crimes, but not tried. During his 20 month imprisonment, Ferdinand Porsche's son, Ferry Porsche, decided to build his own car because he could not find an existing one that he wanted to buy. The first models of what was to become the 356 were built in a small sawmill in Gmünd, Austria. The prototype car was shown to German auto dealers, and when pre-orders reached a set threshold, production was begun. Many regard the 356 as the first Porsche simply because it was the first model sold by the fledgling company. Porsche commissioned Zuffenhausen-based company Reutter Carosseri, which had previously collaborated with Porsche on Volkswagen Beetle prototypes, to produce the 356's steel body. Porsche constructed an assembly plant across the street from Reutter Carosseri; that assembly plant is now known as Porschestrasse. The 356 was road certified in 1948.

The Porsche’s company logo was based on the coat of arms of Free People's State of Württemberg of former Weimar Germany, which had Stuttgart as its capital and became part of Baden-Württemberg after the political consolidation of West Germany in 1949.

Not long afterwards, on January 30, 1951, Ferdinand Porsche died from complications following a stroke.

In post-war Germany parts were generally in short supply, so the 356 automobile used components from the Volkswagen Beetle including its engine, gearbox, and suspension. The 356, however, had several evolutionary stages, A, B, and C, while in production and many VW parts were replaced by Porsche-made parts. The last 356s were powered by entirely Porsche-designed engines. The sleek bodywork was designed by Erwin Komenda who also had designed the body of the Beetle. Porsche's signature designs have, from the beginning, featured air-cooled rear-engine configurations (like the Beetle), rare for other car manufacturers, but producing automobiles that are very well balanced.

In 1964, after some success in motor-racing, namely with the Porsche 550 Spyder, the company launched the Porsche 911 another air-cooled, rear-engined sports car, this time with a 6-cylinder "boxer" engine. The team to lay out the body shell design was led by Ferry Porsche's eldest son, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (F. A.). The design phase for the 911 caused internal problems with Erwin Komenda who led the body design department until then. F. A. Porsche complained Komenda made changes to the design not being approved by him. Company leader Ferry Porsche took his son's drawings to neighbouring body shell manufacturer Reuter bringing the design to the 1963 state. Reuter's workshop was later acquired by Porsche (so-called Werk II). Afterward Reuter became a seat manufacturer, today known as Keiper-Recaro.

The design group gave sequential numbers to every project (356, 550, etc.) but the designated 901 nomenclature contravened Peugeot's trademarks on all 'x0x' names, so it was adjusted to 911. Racing models adhered to the "correct" numbering sequence: 904, 906, 908. The 911 has become Porsche's most well-known model, successful on the race-track, in rallies, and in terms of sales. Far more than any other model, the Porsche brand is defined by the 911. It remains in production; however, after several generations of revision, current-model 911s share only the basic mechanical concept of a rear-engined, six-cylinder coupe, and basic styling cues with the original car. A cost-reduced model with the same body, but 356-derived running gear (including its four-cylinder engine), was sold as the 912.

In 1972 the company's legal form was changed from limited partnership to public limited company (AG in German), because Ferry Porsche and his sister, Louise Piëch, felt their generation members did not team up well. This led to the foundation of an executive board whose members came from outside the Porsche family, and a supervisory board consisting mostly of family members. With this change, no family members were in operational charge of the company. F. A. Porsche founded his own design company, Porsche Design, which is renowned for exclusive sunglasses, watches, furniture, and many other luxury articles. Ferdinand Piëch, who was responsible for mechanical development of Porsche's serial and racing cars, formed his own engineering bureau and developed a 5-cylinder-inline diesel engine for Mercedes-Benz. A short time later he moved to Audi and pursued his career through the entire company, up to and including, the Volkswagen Group boards.

The first CEO of Porsche AG was Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann who had been working in the company's engine development. Fuhrmann was responsible for the so-called Fuhrmann-engine used in the 356 Carrera models, as well as the 550 Spyder, having four over-head camshafts instead of a central camshaft as in the Volkswagen-derived serial engines. He planned to cease the 911 during the 70s and replace it with the V8-front engined grand sportswagon 928. As we know today the 911 outlived the 928 by far. Fuhrmann was replaced in the early 80s by Peter W. Schutz, an American manager and self-proclaimed 911 aficionado. He was replaced in 1988 by the former manager of German computer company Nixdorf Computer AG, Arno Bohn, who made some costly miscalculations that led to his dismissal soon after, along with that of the development director, Dr. Ulrich Bez, who was formerly responsible for BMW's Z1 model and today is CEO of Aston Martin.

In 1990, Porsche drew up a memorandum of understanding with Toyota to learn and benefit from Japanese production methods. Currently Toyota is assisting[citation needed] Porsche with hybrid technology, rumored to be making its way into a Hybrid Cayenne SUV, as well as the upcoming four-door coupe, the Panamera.

Following the dismissal of Bohn, an interim CEO was appointed, longtime Porsche employee, Heinz Branitzki, who served in that position until Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking became CEO in 1993. Wiedeking took over the chairmanship of the board at a time when Porsche appeared vulnerable to a takeover by a larger company. During his long tenure, Wiedeking has transformed Porsche into a very efficient and profitable company.

Ferdinand Porsche's grandson, Ferdinand Piëch, was chairman and CEO of the Volkswagen Group from 1993 to 2002. Today he is chairman of the supervisory board. With 12.8 per cent of the Porsche voting shares, he also remains the second largest individual shareholder of Porsche AG after his cousin, F. A. Porsche, (13.6 per cent).

Porsche's 2002 introduction of the Cayenne also marked the unveiling of a new production facility in Leipzig, Saxony, which once accounted for nearly half of Porsche's annual output. The Cayenne Turbo S has the second most powerful production engine in Porsche's history, with the most powerful belonging to the Carrera GT.

In 2004, production of the 605 horsepower (451 kW) Carrera GT commenced in Leipzig, and at EUR 450,000 ($440,000 in the United States) it was the most expensive production model Porsche ever built.

As of 2005, the extended Porsche and Piech families controlled all of Porsche AG's voting shares. In early October 2005 the company announced acquisition of an 18.53% stake in Volkswagen AG and disclosed intentions to acquire additional VW shares in the future. As of June 2006, the Porsche AG stake in Volkswagen had risen to 25.1%, giving Porsche a blocking minority, whereby Porsche can veto large corporate decisions undertaken by VW.

In mid-2006, after years of the Boxster (and later the Cayenne) as the dominant Porsche in North America, the 911 regained its position as Porsche's backbone in the region. The Cayenne and 911 have cycled as the top-selling model since.
